Berthold Delikatessen – German Breakfast, Pastries & Bakes

Under Capitol Kempinski Hotel along busy Stamford Road is Berthold Delikatessen, a perfectly cozy, classy and welcoming cafe.

It was about 11am when we went there. And since it was the perfect hour for brunch, we hit “The Breakfast Club” menu.

Egg Taco – $14

Firstly, let’s address how the Egg Taco came wrapped like a Christmas present!

Encased in this soft taco are velvety scrambled eggs, layered with a modest amount of chopped greens that were planted throughout in tiny chunks.

What was interesting were the 5-6 thin and tender pieces of maple glazed bacon that resembled the taste of “bak kwa” (Chinese barbecued pork). However, I’m not sure just how much I love this combination of ingredients.

Truffle Egg Brioche – $16

Choice of: Salmon/Avocado

A little smaller than expected, but nonetheless delicious!

The brioche was soft, buttery and crispy on the outside. It was certainly one of the better brioches that I’ve tried.

Like the Egg Taco, the eggs were gently scrambled except this time, also infused with truffle.

The outcome? A luscious, fragrant and soft bed of scrambled eggs for the smoked salmon to lay upon.

What I liked most about the salmon was how it was torn in a rough and uneven fashion.

As most elements on this dish were soft, the salmon alongside crunchy and fine bits of bacon had helped to give this dish more texture and dimension, and it’s a winner for me!

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Blueberry Tart – $8

And what’s brunch without pastry?

We were pleasantly surprised by the dollop of whipped cream accompanying this tart, but didn’t know it would come in handy just yet.

The Blueberry Tart was doughy (akin to the texture of a muffin) and much too sweet from both the blueberries and dough itself.

To dilute the sweetness of it all, our subsequent bites had to be taken with the whipped cream.

Rating: 1 out of 5.

Berthold Delikatessen has a wonderful, clean and refreshing ambience.

However, as the cafe is quite small, you might want to avoid the peak hours and the weekends when Capitol Kempinski Hotel guests are heading down for their breakfast.

All in all, Berthold’s menu seems to be priced reasonably for quality of its ingredients, though portions tend to be small.
